L'histoire nous entraîne dans le quotidien de Yuna, une jeune fille de 15 ans qui vient de commencer à jouer au premier VRMMO du monde. Après avoir gagné plusieurs milliards de yens, elle décide de se confiner chez elle pour jouer toute la journée sans même aller à l'école. Aujourd'hui est un grand jour pour l'histoire de ce jeu car une mise à jour majeure est arrivée ! Ainsi, elle reçoit une rare tenue d'ours non transférable. Cependant, cette tenue est bien trop gênante pour Yuna et elle ne peut se permettre de la porter, même en jeu. De plus, après avoir répondu à un sondage concernant cette nouvelle mise à jour, elle apparaît dans une forêt inconnue en portant la fameuse tenue. Yuna va donc commencer son aventure en faisant ce qu'elle désire..

An adaptation of Akira Yoshimura's original suspense novel starring Rentaro Mikuni. 4th year of the Taishō era. About 15 families who moved in search of agricultural land to the land of the pioneers in Hokkaido led a peaceful life. One day, one of the pioneers, Mikio Shimakawa's wife Yura, and her child Taichi are attacked and killed by a bear that cannot hibernate. To resolve the situation, Shimakawa goes against all odds and turns to Ginshiro, the most hated hunter in the village, for help. While Shimakawa was away from the village, Yura and his friends were holding a funeral, the bear attacked again....

Created by Noburo Ofuji, who had been cartoon making since the 1920s, often with decorative paper cutouts. The character animation looks like it was done 15 years before, but a lot of the elements are highly original; design (those trees!), use of camera focus. Heavily musical in a manner that recalls animation's earliest use of sound. The lesson here is: "If you can't count on your friends, travel alone"..

For both the Ainu – and the peoples of the Amur river area on the mainland – the bear is an important spirit ancestor, and the annual ceremonial year used to revolve around ceremonies of the bear cult, where a bear is ritually killed and its spirit honoured. Also documented are aspects of Ainu daily life in the 1930s: houses, boats, ornate swords, religious artifacts, and the elaborately tattooed mouths of the older women.
