Mélanie Parker, architecte, vit seule son jeune fils Sammy. Elle est organisée, rigide et surtout n'attend plus rien des hommes. Jack Taylor, journaliste à gros titres, a la garde de sa jeune fille Maggie un week-end sur deux, et encore. Il est désordonné, laxiste, tout passe après sa carrière et les responsabilités parentales ne sont pas en haut de sa liste. Les deux enfants vont à la même école, mais ne s'apprécient pas. Kristen, l'ex-femme de Jack est voisine de Mélanie. Kristen, remariée part convoler en seconde lune de miel. Jack assumera la garde de Maggie pendant ce temps. C'était prévu. Mais à 6h30 du matin, quand elle sonne à la porte pour déposer Maggie, Jack ne retiens pas toutes les instructions... La première rencontre entre Mélanie et Jack va être plutôt mouvementée et mettre en péril une journée capitale pour leurs carrières respectives, d'autant qu'il va falloir gérer les enfants qui ont raté la sortie scolaire en bateau qui était prévue....
