The Mediator

In an ordinary industrial Soviet town, notable only for presence of a radio-telescope, people start behaving strangely, in a robotic manner, while assuming geometry-inspired aliases and organizing into a new hierarchy. The phenomenon spreads via a device of alien origin, called “the mediator”, capable of implanting extraterrestrial minds into human bodies. The aliens are bound by limitations of the terrestrial technology, having to use the means at the disposal of humans to prepare the grounds for the full-scale invasion. With “the mediator" being unable to subdue minds of children, lunatics, geniuses, and rebels, a struggle over the fate of the town and the human civilization ensues..

Julien Dechaumes est le maire socialiste de Saint-Juire, un charmant petit village de Vendée. Visant les prochaines élections législatives, il réussit à obtenir une subvention du Ministère de la Culture pour doter son village d’une médiathèque. En compagnie de son amie de cœur, l’écrivaine parisienne Bérénice Beaurivage, il rend visite au beau-frère de sa cousine, rédacteur en chef d’un magazine mensuel de gauche intitulé Après-Demain, afin d’obtenir son appui médiatique. À cette occasion, Julien fait la connaissance de la journaliste Blandine Lenoir qui, séduite par sa démarche, décide de lui consacrer un article. Elle se rend à Saint-Juire pour interviewer les habitants et rencontre l'instituteur Marc Rossignol, violemment opposé au projet notamment à cause de l’abattage d’un magnifique arbre centenaire que la construction d’un tel bâtiment entraînerait….
