Cependant, monsieur Germont, le père d'Alfredo, au nom de la respectabilité bourgeoise, obtient d'elle qu'elle rompe avec son fils. Violetta écrit alors une lettre de rupture à Alfredo sans dévoiler le motif réel de sa décision. La maladie mortelle (la tuberculose) dont elle était déjà atteinte, reprend alors de plus belle.
