À Lübeck, riche cité hanséatique, la famille Buddenbrook a fait fortune dans le négoce du grain. En 1835, son installation dans un bel hôtel particulier est l'occasion d'une fête où se réunissent les trois générations : l'aïeul Johann et son épouse Antoinette, leur fils le consul et sa femme Elisabeth, et leurs petits-enfants : Thomas, Christian et Antonie. Le destin de ces derniers semble tout tracé : Thomas l'aîné dirigera l'entreprise, Christian le secondera et "Toni" épousera à son tour un négociant. Sauf que ce monde apparemment immuable est sur le point de voler en éclats....
