Deux personnages cependant sont au delà de ce qu'on appelle "la performance". Papageno d'abord, chanté et interprété par Simon Keenlyside, tout simplement exceptionnel. Le chanteur rend ce personnage particulièrement attachant, pataud, candide et devient la quintessence de l'oiseleur. Vient ensuite le rôle emblématique de cet opéra: La Reine de la Nuit.
