Agadez is a lonely French outpost baking under the desert sun and commanded by the cruel and oppressive Captain Savatt. To it comes, at his own request, Legionnaire Jim Wilson soon followed by his fiancée, Carla Preston, who has been tracing him from post to post. Legionnaires seize the fort and turn Savitt loose in the Arab-haunted desert with only a fraction of the water and food needed to get back to civilization. But Savitt gets through and returns to the fort at the head of an avenging troop of men. But Arabs surround Savitt and his men, and the mutineers, knowing that to leave the fort and aid them means their own death.

Seule dans une petite maison blanche au bord de la route nationale 1, la Transsaharienne, qui relie Alger à Tamanrasset en traversant l’immensité du désert, Malika, 74 ans, a ouvert un jour sa porte au réalisateur Hassen Ferhani, venu là en repérage avec son ami Chawki Amari, journaliste à El Watan et auteur du récit Nationale 1 qui relate son périple sur cet axe nord-sud de plus de 2000 kms. La Malika du roman d’Amari, que Ferhani avoue avoir d’abord perçue comme un « fantasme littéraire », prend tout à coup une épaisseur humaine insoupçonnée dans cet environnement naturellement hostile à l’homme. Elle se prête au projet du film comme elle accueille ses clients, avec une économie de gestes et de paroles, impression renforcée par le mystère qui l’entoure et les rares éléments de sa biographie qui suggèrent qu’elle n’est pas originaire de la région, qu’elle a quitté le nord fertile de l’Algérie pour s’installer dans le désert où elle vit avec un chien et un chat..
